Artifacts for the Earth

I am collecting stories of artifacts, or "objects," or "material beings" that connect people to the earth.

As a maker of things, I am continuously asking myself "What is the point of all this stuff?"

Ever since the industrial revolution, many of us here on earth have lived more and more in the midst of human-made material things: soda cans, cotton t-shirts, toothbrushes, tires. Concerned about the human relationship with the earth, and oftentimes humanity's spiritual side as well, many people denounce this preoccupation with "stuff" as unhealthy, wasteful, and even shallow. To a certain extent, I agree, but I also think materiality is an essential and beautiful facet of being human.

The material world (both human and "natural") has always held great potential for meaning, enriching the life of humans in wonderful, healthy ways. I think it is interesting that the word "materialistic" is used mostly as an insult today. With "artifacts for the earth," I am exploring an alternative meaning and practice of “materialistic” – one that is soul-full instead of soul-less.

How might “materialistic” become a compliment about being insightfully and responsibly attuned to the sensuous world we inevitably inhabit? What sorts of "things" can we incorporate into our lives that help remind us and enable us to live a good life on this planet? What sorts of "things" should I be making and encouraging in the world?

With this project, "artifact" is very broadly defined: I am interested in both human-made artifacts like teacups, as well as other beings such as rocks and grasshoppers. And, in a way, the important thing here is not really the "thing" at all. It is the activity or experience that the thing is wrapped up in.

If you have a story to share - be it yours or one from a friend, family member, book, etc. - I'd love to hear it!

Please email your story to: lea@leafcutterdesigns.com (50 lines or less, please)

If possible, attach an image or hand-drawing of your artifact or being. I will consider your story for inclusion on this webpage. If selected, you will have a chance to edit and refine your submission.

I am not particularly interested in pieces of "fine art" as traditionally defined, such as paintings, but if you have an example that really rocks your world, please send it my way.

Here are some writing prompts: What is the artifact? How do you interact with it? What does it mean to you and why do you think it is so meaningful? What does the artifact allow you - or help you - to do or remember? What would life be like without this artifact? What is the history of this particular artifact in your life, and what is the history of this type of artifact in general? Is it mass-produced, hand-made, or not made by humans at all? Does it lead you to dream of another possible artifact that does not (yet?) exist? I.e. can a close consideration of your artifact inspire the creation of other artifacts that can connect us to the earth?

If so, a sketch of this would be great too!
